This Stupid Election

So yeah, I voted Tuesday. In my rural community, I had gone to vote at around lunchtime. The weather was nice, and the sun was shining. As I drove down the country road to the volunteer fire station where the polls are, I saw the sunlight reflecting off a bunch of car windshields.

That were parked along the side of the road.

By the time I got to the polls and found a place to park, the line was out the front, snaked out back, and went down to this shed at the back corner of the parking lot. To the poll workers’ credit, I was only in line for about twenty minutes. Even then, by the time I left I found out that I was one of over 1200 people who had cast their ballot that day.

All the peace I wanted to feel after casting my vote was destroyed by the chaos that has followed. Even after acknowledging that this process was going to take a while, it still hurts to see a process unfold in an agonizing way to right an historic wrong. Hell, I was prepared for the president’s outlandish theatrics on Wednesday morning, but it doesn’t stop me from being a little angry.

I got to see a person in power lie to a bunch of cameras, and get cheered for it.

I got to hear a bunch of angry Americans chanting to stop counting votes.

I got to see millions of people vote for a guy whose poor management has gotten more Americans killed than in most of our wars.

Even if this was a purely democratic process, these things would be the same. While I understand that people vote for different reasons, I have to wonder if this is the best anyone really has to offer. Sure, it’s a step up from mandatory wars to put tyrants on thrones. But how far up is that step?

At any rate, my mind has been focused on the negative side of things far too long. While some of my earlier points might be valid, they also don’t fully characterize the few good things that people have done over the past several days. And after all is said and done, I do think this process will lead to an end of a four year nightmare.

It’s just disappointing to see how pathetic some people are getting simply because they can’t be allowed to make the same mistake twice in four years.
